Hurtigruten Museum

Country Side

Today’s excursion was a visit to the Hurtigruten Museum. So we disembarked in one town and took a bus ride across the island to Stokmarknes, where the Museum is located. It was delightful to see a little of Norway. Our ship was there waiting for us when we finished touring the Museum.

Museum

The big, bold, box-shaped building of glass that takes the form of a massive ship in a bottle is the Hurtigruten Museum. When you notice the four people in the lower right corner of the photo, you appreciate the scale of this Museum.

Within the structure the MS Finnmarken from 1956 is protected and preserved. The original, DS Finnmarken, launched in 1912, served for 44 years, while the second iteration, MS Finnmarken, debuted in 1956 and was in operation until 1993. Both historical ships are on display at the Hurtigruten Museum.

Our tour guide pointed out that the Museum is also living history since the local community has the opportunity to dine in the dining room and hold gatherings in the parlor.

Northern Lights

Tonight we got a good display of Northern Lights. Of course taking a hand-held photo with an iPhone while on a swaying ship deck does not produce very sharp photos. But I did manage to capture these three images.

Our instructor shared her photos taken with her professional gear.  This was truly a magical experience.
