Fun Place
Talkeetna, Alaska is a small community with a super funky mountain vibe. It’s one of the quirkiest and most unique places in Alaska.
Talkeetna began in 1916 when the area was chosen as a district headquarters for the Alaska Railroad. A post office opened as well as a sawmill, trading post, cigar and donkey store and other businesses as well as many cabins.
We were honored to be allowed to vote in the hotly contested race for honorary Mayor. Chloe has held the post since 2017 and is now facing challenger, Wendell.
Mountaineering Ranger
At the Talkeetna Museum we enjoyed an educational presentation by Roger Robertson who was a Denali mountaineering ranger for almost forty years.
As a mountaineering ranger, Roger has run climbing patrols, maintained High Camp at 14,200 feet, and worked on dozens of search and rescue missions. Roger has also been involved in wilderness stewardship, working to protect Denali from the pollution impacts of an ever-growing number of climbers.
While the successfully enforced “pack in-pack out” policy began in the late 1970’s, with climbers removing all their garbage from the Alaska Range, more was needed. Roger developed the Clean Mountain Can system for managing human waste on climbing expeditions and has been involved in various initiatives to promote sustainable practices in mountaineering.
